I’ve Recently Discovered I Have A Form Of Gum Disease And Wondered If It Can Be Transferred To Other People Through Contact?

October 14th, 2013
Q.

Hi Ian, I’ve just discover that I have a form of gum disease that I can’t remember the name of but it was quite aggressive and I am taking antibiotics for it. My concern is that I have two young children and a wife, I was wondering if my gum disease can be transmitted over from mouth to mouth or from sharing cutlery, etc? I wouldn’t want to transfer anything to anyone so I just wanted to know! Cheers Ian, I hope you can offer your advice on this!

I’ve Recently Become Pregnant And I Want To Protect Against Gum Disease As Best As I Can, What Can You Suggest?

October 7th, 2013
Q.

Hello, I have just found out that I am pregnant. I have been told and witnessed my other pregnant friend’s teeth deterioration during their pregnancies. Two of them suffered from gum disease too. I don’t want this to happen to me, can you please suggest something that will improve and maintain my oral health during pregnancy please? Do you think I’ll have to visit my hygienist more often? Thank you for your time and advice.

Hello, I Have Recently Been Diagnosed With Gum Disease, My Dentist Has Suggested Laser Treatment. Is This The Right Option?

September 30th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Mitsas. I have recently been diagnosed with gum disease and my dentist has decided that I should have laser treatment instead of surgery. I don’t know if this is a good idea as I really don’t like the idea of lasers. Surely the surgery would be more effective? I am basically asking for advice on what you would recommend for this condition? I have advanced gum disease and my teeth have deteriorated very quickly over just six weeks. What would you suggest is my best option?

Have I Got Gum Disease?

February 12th, 2013
Q.

hello there dr Dunn i hope you can help me. I have for the past 3-4 months been suffering with a pain at the back of my mouth that has got progressively worse as time has gone to the point where it hurts all the time now, and I’m having difficulty eating as its so sore. There’s also a nasty taste in my mouth. Is this a sign of gum disease? I have looked at my gums and they dont look red and they arent sore but something is making my whole mouth hurt. Can you explain this for me. Thanks,

Dr Ian Dunn

Can I get a brace on the NHS?

November 19th, 2012
Q.

Hi a couple of years ago I decided to have braces fitted as I have spacing between the 5 front upper teeth and 2 front bottom teeth. I went to see my dentist who referred me to a orthodontist who after examining my mouth had said I could not get braces because I had gum disease. The orthodontist then referred me to a periodontist as he felt I needed treatment of gum disease before I could have braces. So over the past few years I have been seeing the periodontist and undergone treatment and my gums are now stable. On my last visit to him which was couple of weeks ago, after examining my gums he had told me I am now ready for braces and will write to my orthodontist who had referred me. However when I contacted the orthodontist, the nurse told me I was no longer their patient and they had discharged me in 2009. The nurse also told me I may not be eligible for treatment on the NHS as I am over 18. I felt really upset over this as they had not notified me that they were discharging me and I was under the false hope all this time that I will be seen by them again. I have now made an appointment with my dentist so I can find out a bit more about which steps to take but I am not very confident about how much advice they will give me. What worries me the most is that if I am not eligible for NHS treatment I may not be able to afford treatment as I am on low income. However the spacing between my teeth has effected me greatly. I have low self-esteem and do not like to socialise. I feel quite isolated and low and feel my teeth is having an impact on my well being. I feel quite depressed all the time and also because I spent years treating the gum disease and hoping I could one day get braces. The spacing also affect my speech slightly. The extensive treatment of the gum disease has also widened the gaps between each teeth. I wonder if you can give me some advice as to whether I may be eligible for NHS treatment due to the emotional impact this is having on me and hence my health. Also if I have to go private how much would I have to spend for the sort of treatment I require. I would appreciate if you can help. Thank you

Should I treat my gum disease with dentures or implants?

November 19th, 2012
Q.

Hi Ian, I am 72 and only have about half my teeth left, most of them have fallen out painlessly but relentlessly for the last five years. I recently visited two dentists, who gave conflicting advice. Both said the problem was caused by gum disease. One reccommended extracting the remaining teeth, which he said would cure the gum disease problem. He then proposed an ‘All-on-4′ dental implant procedure to replace all teeth. The second dentist suggested leaving most of the teeth untouched, and making plates in my mouth to replace the missing teeth, the idea being to slowly transition to a full set of false teeth, getting used to eating with dentures gradually.
I have some questions – with Dentist 1’s method of full extraction, is it ok to do the implant surgery on the same day as extraction, or would it be advisable to wait for the gum disease to heal first? Will removing the teeth cure the gum disease (they are badly stained and cannot be cleaned properly as they are too unstable). Finally, with Dentist 2’s method to leave the teeth in,surely the gum disease will continue, so I will still have bad breath and receding gums. Any advice would be appreciated.

I had a pain on the left side of my mouth now it has moved to the right side, im unable to see any signs of damage, what should i do?

October 15th, 2012
Q.

Hi, can you help please. I had a pain on the left side of my mouth, I think I had a small ulcer which has now gone by using an antibacterial mouthwash. However the pain is now the right side {top} of my mouth. The pain is quite bad when I chew. I cant quite pinpoint whether it’s my teeth or gums which are hurting. I’m unable to feel a hole in the tooth, I do not have any redness, swelling or abcess on the gum. Is there anything I can try before I see my dentsist? Thank you in advance
