I Have Been To My Dentist For A Year To Try And Get My Gum Disease Under Control, But Things Are Getting Worse. Should I Turn To Surgery?

August 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi. I’m 25 years old
I have been going to my dentist now for over a year for deep cleans etc to treat my gum disease. My gums are receding and my bone is weakening I have one wobbly tooth at the front on the bottom row and my top front two teeth have considerably moved and I am desperate for a brace, yet I am not allowed any orthodontist works till my gum disease has cleared. I feel I am not improving and when my dentist does the measurements I was told some are worsening others improving. I have never missed a day brushing my teeth twice or more and I just can’t understand what I’m doing wrong. Is there any surgery I can have to get my teeth looking better as I hate my smile?

I’m 72 Years Old And I Have A Loose Tooth Which Hurts When I Eat. What Would You Suggest For Me To Do?

July 24th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Mitsas. I would like some advice. I’m 72 years old and I have 2 pallets one on the top and one bottom. The one at the top as 4 teeth the one at the bottom has 2. The pallet at the bottom sits next to a tooth which is loose, and the gum on one side of my tooth has receded badly but the other side of the tooth is okay. The loose tooth is painful whenever I try to eat anything. I don’t like the thought of extraction. My dentist is NHS and he did say he could weld the loose to the good one. Do you know if this a good idea or not? Thank you for your time.

My Dentist Doesn’t Know Where The Bad Taste In My Mouth Is Coming From. Can You Help Me?

July 17th, 2014
Q.

I’m 19 years old, take good care of my teeth, brush/floss daily use mouthwash, etc. I had a cavity on my back molar for about 4 years that I knew about and about 2 months ago, I started having this pungent taste in my mouth, but no bad breath? I swore I had gum disease. My gums don’t bleed & I know I have super deep pockets because floss goes in them. I have minor recession on my bottom front teeth because of my overbite constantly rubbing. So I finally got to the dentist, he filled the cavity and actually told me my home care was in the top one percent! For the taste, he recommended a tongue scrubber. I used the scrubber for 2 weeks and still no change. I called them and they told me to use biotene mouthwash. The taste became even worse! So my dad said maybe try baking soda? I tried, & it lit my mouth on fire. Now I have pain in my lower front teeth. I just went back to the dentist; he was so confused when I told him about the pain; so he checked. He told me he sees absolutely nothing wrong!!! The only thing he told me was I could see a gum doctor. He told me I didn’t have to go because he sees nothing wrong. Sorry this is so long. But I swear I have gum disease! Like advanced!! My gums are receding on the top now & the earliest the periodontist could get me in was in 2 weeks! Please help!

Are My Headaches Being Caused By My Periodontal Disease?

May 19th, 2014
Q.

Hi. Is it possible to suffer from headaches due to having periodontal gum disease? I have recently been diagnosed with this condition and having read a bit more about it would like to ask what would be the best way to prevent further damage to gums and bone to prevent tooth loss? My dentist has suggested using various mouthwash and brushing more often but my condition is quite severe and I would like to know if the BOST treatment would be the best option or the regular treatment. According to my dentist and having seen recent X-rays the bone has significantly receded by around 6mm which suggest a very serious problem could you please be able to give me more advice and an opinion on how you would seem the best treatment to suit my condition? Thank you!!

I Have Seen Two Dentist But I’m Still Losing Gum Tissue And Getting Blisters. Do You Have Any Further Suggestions?

April 14th, 2014
Q.

I am losing gum tissue & as well as getting blisters on the roof of my mouth. I have seen two dentists so far. I have tried using baking soda & salt instead of my tooth paste, I used Amazan, I even tried using peroxide but nothing seem to help. I brush my teeth daily and have regular cleaning & check ups so I don’t understand how this could have happened. I have had a deep cleaning & have been treated for ANUG. The medication seem to help but not cure. I was given more but it seems like my body has adapted to it and it did not continue to help. I am currently on a steroid (Oracort – Triamcinolone
acetonide) which gives some relief for the pain. I have had a biopsy done & the only thing it told me was that there were no cancer cells & is not vascular. Do you have any suggestions?

My Upper Gums Are Bleeding Quite Badly. Has This Gone Worse Because I’m Wearing Braces?

March 17th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Mitsas, I hope you can help me. I had a brace fitted 3 years ago because I had very crooked teeth and it’s still on. I’ve got slight gum disease, is this made worse with braces? My upper gums are receding quite badly. I’m just inquiring to see if there’s anything that can be done about this? If so I’d just like a rough guideline on costs? What would the procedure involve? I look forward to hearing an experts opinion on this matter. Thank you for your input in advance.

I Don’t Think My Dentist Scales My Teeth Right. I’m Trying To Stop My Gums From Receding. What Can I Do?

January 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Mitsas. I have gum disease and my gums have receded exposing some root and they occasionally bleed. I use corsodyl mouthwash and colgate pro gum health toothpaste. My dentist tells me that my gums are healthy? He recommended using an interdental brush to floss with.  When he scales them he only does the front teeth which I don’t think is right. I feel film on back teeth but I don’t like to say. Is this correct? Also, what treatments are available for gum disease as I am doing all I can brushing wise but my gums obviously aren’t that healthy as they recede. I would appreciate some advice, many thanks.

I Have A Small Crack On My Tooth. Is There Any Chance This Could Be Down To Gum Recession?

January 6th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dimitrios. I have a horizontal line (possibly a crack) on my lower left incisor, just above the gum line. It has recently been very sensitive to cold drinks. Could this be linked to gum recession? Or due to a cracked tooth? The crack is at the front of the tooth, not the back as far as I an tell. The ridge or crack is barely visible, but I can feel it if I run my nail over it. I have a dentist appointment next week, but I am worried about leaving it so long.

Thanks.

I Have Bad Gum Recession And May Need Root Canal Treatment. What Would It Cost To Fix?

December 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Zurdo, can you help me? I’m 24 and have bad gum recession around a number of teeth from gum disease. Mainly on 4 teeth at bottom and 3 on top. I went to my NHS dentist she wasn’t very friendly or helpful and told me to use Corsodyl toothpaste and mouthwash and go back in 6 months. She also mentioned I may need root canal treatment as more than 50% of my tooth is uncovered. Can anything be done or am I going to loose my teeth. Could you tell me what would it cost to fix?
