Hello, I Have Recently Been Diagnosed With Gum Disease, My Dentist Has Suggested Laser Treatment. Is This The Right Option?

Q.
Hello Dr Mitsas. I have recently been diagnosed with gum disease and my dentist has decided that I should have laser treatment instead of surgery. I don’t know if this is a good idea as I really don’t like the idea of lasers. Surely the surgery would be more effective? I am basically asking for advice on what you would recommend for this condition? I have advanced gum disease and my teeth have deteriorated very quickly over just six weeks. What would you suggest is my best option?
A.
Hello and thank you for your enquiry, you may want to start by mentioning your problem with laser treatment to your dentist and they may be able to allay your problems regarding this type of treatment. It’s difficult for me to diagnose your condition without seeing your X-ray. If you are not happy, why not get a second opinion, if the diagnosis matches to your current dentist you’ll know it’s probably the best course of action to take.
