My boyfriend’s gums bleed when brushing and his breath smells. Is gum disease contagious?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Ian Dunn,

I think my boyfriend has gum disease! He has really bad breath and bleeds quite a lot when he brushes his teeth. His teeth also look in quite bad condition. I am wondering if it is contagious? I have very good dental hygiene and always brush my teeth twice a day, but am I at risk from kissing him? Can it be passed on through saliva? And if so, will I know if I have caught it?

Thanks for your time

How do I stop my gums spontaneously bleeding and doing so at night?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

HI Mr Dunn, I’m currently half way through my second year at college and am seventeen. I’ve been having a few problems with my gums recently and whilst trying to research I found this site. I worried about my gums as I now think I may have gum disease. on occasion my gums bleed for no reason just spontaneously some times, it did it the other day in class which was really embarrassing. I have had to pull over on the bike when it’s done it and there’s always blood on my teeth in the mornings. what is this and how do I stop it?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr. I am a newly recovered alcholic. I used to suffer from depression and acoholism. I have now changed my life for the beter and at fourty four i felt it couldn’t go on any longer. I have been told that smoking can led to many problems like mouth cancer and so on but as I never smoked thats not a bother, I bring this up becase after a good drink, as most people do, I wake up with dry mouth. I would like to know why you get dry mouth what damage dry mouth can cause to my gums which I assume should be moist? cheers sir

I have chronic deterioration. Would BOST treatment be a good idea?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

Dr Dunn ,
I attended a appt at the Dental Clinic on the 21st March 2012.At Homerton
Hospital.I was told that I have chronic detereation under a gold crown top left moluer and bottom left (also a.gold crown) not much better . However
The Dr has adivised ,extraction of both ,though if the bottom left crown is not causing me too much discomfort .Then I could delay the removal . Would BOST
treatment be a option , I am also a smoker and have receding gums .
Also would I be able to receive this treatment from my Dentist .

Could diet affect my gum health and be the reason for pain?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

Dear My Dunn,

I have been experiencing tooth pains recently and had wondered why. I think It is down to my diet and sugary things i drink. I do not smoke or any of that. I do not drink alcohol excessvely either. I contemplated that as everything in my mouth is physically conected then the prblems and reasons may be also. the teeth are aching somewhat as i say but i wondered if this could have anything to do with my gum? could my diet affect my gums health as they do my teeth? thanks Dr, your time is appreciated

I have developed a Stillman’s cleft and could lose a tooth, what should I do?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

Hi
My gum has receeded and my dentist has said a cleft has developed .Sorry I can’t remember the name of the cleft but it was named after someone so you probably know what I mean. When I saw him he put some kind of glue over my gum and tooth to try to get the gum to reattach . This had to be left on foe 24 hours and he told me to go back to see him in 2 weeks. The glue does not appear to have made any difference and my gum is very painful and is a white colour and the tooth seems even more exposed. I am worried that I will end up loosing my tooth it is right at the front so I really do not want that to happen. Do you think I need to go back to my dentist sooner than he suggested ? I read on your web site about a graft is this something any dentist can do or only a specialist? and should my dentist know about this proceedure? I am concerned because he told me unless the gum reattached I would loose my tooth. I look forward to recieving some advise from you.

Is gum disease curable considering I attend regular dental visits?

March 30th, 2012
Q.

I recently visited my dentist and she spoke to me about gum disease. When she was talking about my gums she mentioned stage 2 and stage 3. How do the stages of gum disease work and is gum disease reversible? Does this mean my teeth will fall out? I do brush my teeth twice daily, use mouth wash and a tooth pick. I visit my dentist every 6 months and have regular scrapes and polishes. Can vitamin tablets help? I know it’s a lot but thanks anyway

Should I be worried about gum recession and black areas between my teeth?

March 26th, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Zurdo, I  hope your well. I came to see you last year in january. I have noticed I have gum recession on one of my lower molars at the front. Also I noticed that on one of my upper tooths I have developed a black triangle after seeing my local dentist he has said I have nothing to worry about in regards to the black triangle. Also in regards gum recession can this result in immediate tooth loss. According to my dentist this was caused by aggressive brushing. I would like to hear from you.
