I have developed a Stillman’s cleft and could lose a tooth, what should I do?

Q.
Hi
My gum has receeded and my dentist has said a cleft has developed .Sorry I can’t remember the name of the cleft but it was named after someone so you probably know what I mean. When I saw him he put some kind of glue over my gum and tooth to try to get the gum to reattach . This had to be left on foe 24 hours and he told me to go back to see him in 2 weeks. The glue does not appear to have made any difference and my gum is very painful and is a white colour and the tooth seems even more exposed. I am worried that I will end up loosing my tooth it is right at the front so I really do not want that to happen. Do you think I need to go back to my dentist sooner than he suggested ? I read on your web site about a graft is this something any dentist can do or only a specialist? and should my dentist know about this proceedure? I am concerned because he told me unless the gum reattached I would loose my tooth. I look forward to recieving some advise from you.

Stillmans cleft?

I am unsure what your dentist has done for you, but by the sounds of it, you may need a gum graft. There are a number of types of graft including Free Gingival Grafts and Connective Tissue Grafts. I would not expect any dentist to be able to do this and I would suggest that you ask for a referral to a periodontist to discuss the need for further treatment.
