I think my boyfriend has gum disease! He has really bad breath and bleeds quite a lot when he brushes his teeth. His teeth also look in quite bad condition. I am wondering if it is contagious? I have very good dental hygiene and always brush my teeth twice a day, but am I at risk from kissing him? Can it be passed on through saliva? And if so, will I know if I have caught it?

Hi thanks for your question, it’s one I imagine a few people will be wondering about. Gum disease is not contagious so you can relax a little!. Make sure you keep on top if your oral hygiene anyway, this will not only maintain your oral health but will give you piece of mind. As for your boyfriend I would discuss this with your him though, bleeding upon brushing is a sure sign something’s wrong and it is really important that he gets this sorted and if you cannot discuss it with him, who can? best of luck
