I have a peasize, painless lump next to my crown, what is it and should I be worried?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

Hello, Ian! I really hope you can clarify my problem. I have a lump/pea size just above my side crown. It appeared about a week ago. It is not painful but bothers me anyway. The crown was put there recently – 3 weeks ago. Do you know what it could be, it is really bothering me?
Thank you very much

I think I have gum disease, but I am not the biggest fan of the dentist, do you have any advice?

October 27th, 2011
Q.

hi, I think I may have some form of gum disease but I have bit of a phobia of the dentistry. if I need to visit a dentist I accept it and will go but I want to avoid just going for the sake of it so I popped on here first to ask about it, I think I may go anyway but still, what will a dentist do to determine whether I do or don’t have it that I can’t otherwise do at home ? and If I do have gum disease of some form what will he do then will he extract a tooth in the area or start doing any surgery? if someone like me turns up with gum disease what will the dentist do? I am not that afraid of going just nervous a bit so I just want to be informed about gum disease and dentist before I do, thank you Dr.

I can feel a ridge at the bottom of my tooth on the gum line, do I have periodontitis?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

Is there a good way of checking for periodontal disease. I was flossing the other day and felt a ridge just at my gum line on one or two of my teeth with the spikey bit. I looked online and apparently this could be the bottom of my enamel/ start of my roots. this worried me as I have has a bit of gingivitis in the past but had hoped to have eradicated it. upon my research I found that periodontal disease was the destructive version of the disease and i’m worried I may have it. could you tell me the difference between to gingivitis and periodontal disease as well as how I can check for it. thank you for your help

If gum disease is hereditary is there anyway I cannot get it?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

I would like to know if there is anything i can do to help prevent gum disease. I have been told That you can almost inherit gum disease from your parents. that it is the way you and your gums react to the build up of bacteria. the issue is that both my mum and dad have had gingivitis and that have as for as I can remember, always brushed and generally practiced good oral health methods. does this mean that I will get It no matter what? Im 16 now and don’t want to have to go through gum disease. If it is hereditary Is there nothing I can do about it because even brushing to keep off bacteria obviously doesn’t work? I’m generally quite worries about this as they say the second thing someone notices after your eyes is your smile, and having just started college I don’t want to jeopardise that. thanks

Despite regular check ups and dentist assurance, I have lost teeth and am about to loose more! Can you help me?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

I visited a dentist for 4 years and went every 6 months for a check up.He told me my teeth were perfect. I changed to another dentist and he advised that i had gum disease – peridontal. I was first given the root cleaning treatment 4 times which was agony. No anasthetic allowed i was told. Since then to my extreme distress I have had to have 10 teeth removed. I visit every3 months and again am getting the root cleaning treatment this week and a further one next week. I use corsodyl toothpaste, mouthwash and the small brushes for cleaning. I feel that thinks are not getting better. I wake up in morning with bad breath and during day my mouth tastes awful. I can feel movement in another tooth. What more can i do. Can you give me any advice. Thanks

I think I have a cracked gum, have you seen this before and what can I do?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

hello, There is what I think is a crack in my gum. there’s just a dark line traversing my gum vertically. its right between the canine and the tooth behind on the left hand side. my friend seems to thing i may have exercised a poor diet and have put two much pressure on that area consistently whist another has put it down to stress (I do have a stressful job), I dont nkow whats what? I hadn’t noticed it until the other day and as such believe it has only just come to be otherwise I would have noticed it and seeked some form of help before now. have you heard of cracked gums before and what does it mean? is this a sign of gum disease and can I get rid of it, Im wondering whether the gum in that area will grow back or not at all? if you could please give me some information that would be most appreciated thanks a lot.

I got over periodontal disease, can it return and what do I look for?

October 14th, 2011
Q.

Hi there, I am very pleased to say that I got over my periodontal disease and have previously used this site and have had great/helpful feedback from yourself that pointed me in the right direction in terms of identifying what how serious the problem could have been and indeed was. thankyou for this. however im a bit worried that even though Ive been keeping up my oral hygiene routines he signs of gum disease seem to be returning but im not sure, is it possible to contract gingivitis after getting over periodontal disease (I thought if I was to catch them both it would have been the other way around as in gingivitis first Then periodintitis?) what are the very first signs or gingivitis or does it just start with bleeding gums?

Can gum disease return?

October 13th, 2011
Q.

Hi im wondering, having suffered from gum disease for a while, when would I notice- or would I notice when and if periodontis began to develop in my mouth as opposed to gum disease??
I am keeping up my oral hygiene exercise so to speak and actually think my gums are recovering/re cooperating or wt ever- they’re getting better than they were I can now brush up and against them without them hurting or bleeding (they would never do this unexpectedly just when caught) but now theyre begining to become pink- still slight red patches but 80% better, however im always paranoid itll come back and if so what should i look out for?

I have recieved different opinions about my gums from my hygienist and NHS dentist, who is right?

October 13th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr,

I first had periodontal treatment with cleaning under the gum line and antibiotic applied a year ago. After that I was told to see the hygienist every 3 months. I went after 6 months (not 3) and was told that I needed the treatment again.

I just went to a NHS dentist and have been told that my gums are fine and he gave me a quick clean (5 minutes). Also said that I should see him every 6/12 months.

Who should I believe ? The second one is NHS and I feel he ripped me off.

Thanks
