Diagnosed with gum disease, told not to start antibiotics until my next appointment which is in 3 weeks, is this correct?

May 18th, 2012
Q.

Hi there, I’ve been diagnosed with gum disease today. I have been given a prescription for antibiotics but told not to start them until 3 days before my 1st appointment to have my teeth thoroughly cleaned, however the earliest appointment is on the 16th May, 3 weeks away. I forgot to mention to the dentist that I also have neutropenia. Is it ok to wait 3 weeks without taking the anitbiotics? It seems odd to be diagnosed then told to wait, admittedly the dentist wouldn’t have known that it would be a 3 week wait. Please can you advise? Many thanks!

Is there anything I can do to save my teeth?

August 23rd, 2011
Q.

I am sixty nine years old and have quite severe gum disease at present. I do brush my teeth twice daily and also partake in flossing before I end up going to bed every night. I go to the dentist every six months as is recommended I believe but I still can’t prevent plaque from building up. It is now getting to the point where my lower teeth will have to be removed which is absolutely devastating to me. Can I do anything to save them at this stage?

Will my gum disease reoccur?

August 23rd, 2011
Q.

I’av just been to see my dentist and he said that I have intermediary gum disease and he will need to clean all four gum quadrants before doing an implant. Also, he says that I may lose another tooth due to the gum disease but may be able to save it. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. Does gum disease reoccur once you have already had it? Is it safe to get an implant if you have had recent gum disease? I am trying to find out these things now as I have had botched dental work done in the past, including having several teeth removed which did not need to be removed resulting in an infection, resulting in gum decay. Anyhow, I am trying to improve my mouth the best I can. Thank you for any answers you can provide.
