Is there anything I can do to save my teeth?

Q.
I am sixty nine years old and have quite severe gum disease at present. I do brush my teeth twice daily and also partake in flossing before I end up going to bed every night. I go to the dentist every six months as is recommended I believe but I still can’t prevent plaque from building up. It is now getting to the point where my lower teeth will have to be removed which is absolutely devastating to me. Can I do anything to save them at this stage?
A.
Hello and thank you for your enquiry. You need an assessment of the clinical situation of the gums and bone around your teeth to answer that question. If your teeth still have reasonable bone support left it is possible to prevent any further bone loss and therefore your teeth with treatment and regular care. You may require more intense and frequent professional cleaning than your 6-monthly visits to your dentist.
