The initial steps to improve the health of your gums are good oral hygiene and professional removal of the plaque that you cannot remove, particularly when there are hard deposits and hidden plaque under the gums. Adequate instructions from a dentist or hygienist would be helpful to make sure that you use the correct brushing technique and aids. You need also an assessment of the state of your gums and teeth to plan the cleaning sessions required accordingly. The next step is to assess the response of your gums to the treatment to plan an adequate maintenance regime that may include regular hygienist sessions over the time, but this will depend very much on how good you are with your home care. You should not be apprehensive about visiting a dentist whose duty is assessing your treatment needs and options no matter how good or bad the condition of your mouth is.
