Is there a way to stop gums from receding?

Q.
My boyfriend is having a spot of trouble with his teeth and gums! I was just doing some research to find out what might be the problem and I came across this website. His gums seem to be receding on a few of his teeth top and bottom. He says they can become very sensitive sometimes but other times not. Is there a way to stop the gums from receding, or can you get a treatment for it? Will the gums grow back? He does brush and floss but he smokes, that probably hasn’t helped. Got any advice? Thanks Jose!

Hi, thanks for your question! Receding gums may be a sign of an underlying gum disease. Gum disease is a chronic disease, caused by bacteria around the necks of the teeth resulting in a chronic inflammation of the gums. The gums may bleed, there may be swelling and as the supporting bone and attachment to the tooth “wears” off, the teeth may become mobile. There are aggravating factors like smoking, stress, tooth grinding and so on, which can accelerate the progression of the destruction.
The treatment needs to focus on the control of bacteria, both above the gum (toothbrushing especially between teeth) and under the gums (by the dentist/hygienist). Sometimes a course of antibiotics is recommended with the dental treatment.
After treatment the gums are expected to shrink a bit further, especially where the disease is more severe, they wont grow back. Please request a periodontal diagnose to your dentist and discuss the adequate treatment. If in doubt, request a referral to a specialist Periodontist.
