My Gums Have Begun To Bleed After Using A Teeth Whitening Kit. I Smoke Also. Should I Be Worried?

Hello Dr Mitsas, I recently ordered a tooth whitening kit for use at home and it did say under side effects that my gums could become sensitive, which I anticipated. However, my gums are actually bleeding. But I do smoke, so do you think that this could be the reason as to why they’re bleeding? I just think it’s a bit of a coincidence that as soon as I begin whitening my teeth they start to bleed and I’ve never heard of this happening to anybody else before, what do you think? I have given up smoking but am using nicorette gum, will this aggravate my gum disease problem?

Hello, I have been advised by my dentist that I have a bad problem with gum disease. I have given up smoking and am still using nicorette gum can this aggrivate it? As well as this my mum has had a problem with it, I am on anti depressants and have been taking HRT as i started on the early menopause at 38 yrs old. From what i can see all of these things can be contributory, is this the case and if so what would you recommend as I am very concerned? Thank you

My parents started losing there teeth in their late 40’s, is it genetic?

Hello Ian, how are you? I just have a quick question regarding my teeth and gums. Unfortunately both my parents started loosing their teeth when they hit late 40’s. I don’t think there oral health was that bad, they say it was down to genetics? I was just wondering if i will suffer the same fate, is gum disease and losing teeth hereditary? Is there anything i can do to stop this? Any info would be great! Thanks!

Is there a way to stop gums from receding?

My boyfriend is having a spot of trouble with his teeth and gums! I was just doing some research to find out what might be the problem and I came across this website. His gums seem to be receding on a few of his teeth top and bottom. He says they can become very sensitive sometimes but other times not. Is there a way to stop the gums from receding, or can you get a treatment for it? Will the gums grow back? He does brush and floss but he smokes, that probably hasn’t helped. Got any advice? I have smoked for two years and think I have gum disease, what should I do?

I think I may have gum disease as my gums bleed after brushing and the gum between my bottom fang and molar seems to have a split in it. I brush twice a day and regularly floss and use mouthwash however I have smoked for two years. I haven’t really suffered with dental problems apart from having a brace in my teens. What should I do? I’m quite apprehensive about going the dentist plus I don’t have the funds right now. Thanks!

After Smoking for 23 years I have severe gum disease, My dentist said I need at least 8 sessions of deep scale cleaning at £98 per session, do I need that many?

Can you help – I have given up smoking after 23 years and have now been diagnosed with severe gum disease. I have read your treatment for periodontal gum problems and my dentist says this is what I need. He says I need to have 8 sessions of deep scale cleaning and anti-biotics. These sessions are £98 a time! This is where my problem is. I obviously need this procedure but do I really need 8 sessions? I think my dentist is trying to get money out of me. Please advise me if 8 sessions is common. Thank you very much.

Will my sons get gum disease because their dad has it?

Hi, gum disease runs in my husbands side of the family and we have two young boys together. Iam just wondering if there’s anything I can do to prevent them from getting it or at least reducing their risks? If it helps they are 3 and 4 years old, hardly every have sweets and eat and drink yoghurts and milk regularly. is there anything else I can do?
