If gum disease is hereditary is there anyway I cannot get it?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

I would like to know if there is anything i can do to help prevent gum disease. I have been told That you can almost inherit gum disease from your parents. that it is the way you and your gums react to the build up of bacteria. the issue is that both my mum and dad have had gingivitis and that have as for as I can remember, always brushed and generally practiced good oral health methods. does this mean that I will get It no matter what? Im 16 now and don’t want to have to go through gum disease. If it is hereditary Is there nothing I can do about it because even brushing to keep off bacteria obviously doesn’t work? I’m generally quite worries about this as they say the second thing someone notices after your eyes is your smile, and having just started college I don’t want to jeopardise that. thanks

I think I have a cracked gum, have you seen this before and what can I do?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

hello, There is what I think is a crack in my gum. there’s just a dark line traversing my gum vertically. its right between the canine and the tooth behind on the left hand side. my friend seems to thing i may have exercised a poor diet and have put two much pressure on that area consistently whist another has put it down to stress (I do have a stressful job), I dont nkow whats what? I hadn’t noticed it until the other day and as such believe it has only just come to be otherwise I would have noticed it and seeked some form of help before now. have you heard of cracked gums before and what does it mean? is this a sign of gum disease and can I get rid of it, Im wondering whether the gum in that area will grow back or not at all? if you could please give me some information that would be most appreciated thanks a lot.

I got over periodontal disease, can it return and what do I look for?

October 14th, 2011
Q.

Hi there, I am very pleased to say that I got over my periodontal disease and have previously used this site and have had great/helpful feedback from yourself that pointed me in the right direction in terms of identifying what how serious the problem could have been and indeed was. thankyou for this. however im a bit worried that even though Ive been keeping up my oral hygiene routines he signs of gum disease seem to be returning but im not sure, is it possible to contract gingivitis after getting over periodontal disease (I thought if I was to catch them both it would have been the other way around as in gingivitis first Then periodintitis?) what are the very first signs or gingivitis or does it just start with bleeding gums?

Can gum disease return?

October 13th, 2011
Q.

Hi im wondering, having suffered from gum disease for a while, when would I notice- or would I notice when and if periodontis began to develop in my mouth as opposed to gum disease??
I am keeping up my oral hygiene exercise so to speak and actually think my gums are recovering/re cooperating or wt ever- they’re getting better than they were I can now brush up and against them without them hurting or bleeding (they would never do this unexpectedly just when caught) but now theyre begining to become pink- still slight red patches but 80% better, however im always paranoid itll come back and if so what should i look out for?

Once my gingivitis has been treated can it return?

October 12th, 2011
Q.

if gingivitis is receding how quickly can it return? I used to have gingivitis and got over it/eradicated it. however I went to the dentist the other day and now im booked in to see the hygienist because my gums were bleeding when he probed them? If gum disease dying could it just return at the drop of a hat or does it not die as such? If not whats the fastest way I cacn get rid of it i dont think it is major anymore just sort of there niggling so i assume it shouldnt be to hard to get rid of?
also what does the dentist mean when he probed your gums (with that spike on a stick) and says “2…2…2…2″ to his assistant on the computer or is that different with everyone?

Can I keep bacteria from settling by swilling water constantly?

October 11th, 2011
Q.

good afternoon,
I have been doing a bit of online research and have found that the flow of saliva plays a massive part in getting rid of bacterium and plaque obviously not getting rid of it all but helping. so then I had this thought. if it takes around Fifteen minutes for plaque to build up after a snack or meal whilst out of the house could I swill my mouth with a drink- water! in order to aid the saliva’s job or disrupting the bacteria as it tries to form? would this be a good idea? I have a two pin sized holes either side of my top, right, central incisor. I was hoping by doing this I could help stop them growing bigger? are they a sign of periodontitis/gingivitus/neither and if so will this help

I have a space opening up between my teeth, could it be gum disease?

October 7th, 2011
Q.

I have developed a bit of receding gum but only in one place on my gumline? between my central and lateral incisors. there never used to be a gap there and after flossing and closer inspection I noticed that there was a gap between the two teeth. is this a common place to get gum recession? id never spotted it before and so assume that it is new. im not sure whether mouth washing the area wuold be a good idea as i feel that all i am doing is eroding the area? I work in an office and wash water around it as much as possible (not 24/7 just every few swigs) in the hope tha this will wash away any bacteria thats built up? could you advise on using mouthwash or not and what it could potentially be?
