Can gum disease also damage my teeth?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hi there I have a question regarding gum disease and its effects. you may have to correct me if any of this is wrong to confirm with me- I know it’s called gum disease because its primary problem areas lie with the gums, inflammation, bleeding and gum destruction. my first question is 1) is there a difference between gum recession and gum destruction? and 2) can ‘gum’ disease affect the teeth? the problem is that I think my gums have receded/been destroyed if there is a difference, but tiny gaps have started to appear between my teeth not where the gum was but most of the way down the sides of my teeth. if these are both signs of gum disease what can I do to stop and reverse the process or id this not possible?

I have swollen gums, is this a sign of gum disease?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

I looked on your website and it says that swollen gums are a sign of gum disease so I decided to contact you right away about a potential issue that I have with my gums. I dont know if my gums are technically swollen or not as they are mostly tight but if i have a swollen line as such running along the gum line would you say that was inflammation and therefore a sign of gum disease or is it just the way the gum has fallen? to give you an idea it looks like carpet against the wall, as in the whole face is OK but the edge has just lapped up a bit? it mainly occurs around the site of my upper right and left canine but its just about visible around some other teeth.

My gums are receding but my dentist says I don’t have gum disease, can that happen?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

I have noticed my gums receeding at an alarming rate, I first noticed it last year after using several home teeth whitening kits. I went to the dentist who said I did not have gum disease and it was part of the ageing process but I am only 38 years old. I only clean my teeth with a sonic care tooth brush and floss regulary but I have noticed that certain things I do make it worse like brushing too much and using whitening tooth paste.
Hope you can help

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello after having pre-diabetes, sustained for some time I have now been diagnosed with type two diabetes, It is not as serious as I always thought. however I have heard stories and whispers linking gum disease and diabetes, I have heard that gum disease is also linked to strokes and bodies can inherit ways of dealing with plaque (or not doing in this case). put all them together and my mum once had a stroke, which she is now perfectly over- I inherit her bodies way of dealing with plaque get gum disease and diabetes? it is farfetched but I wanted you opinion on gum disease and diabetes, am I more at risk now than I was before and what can I do? thanks Dr

My gums have gone to normal and the ulcer has gone to, where the ulcer was it feels like a hole is there now, ive got 2 days left on the antibotics left, i keep getting this awful pain in my top gum on the right hand side, it comes and goes through out the day ive had it for days now, The pain last about a min, but its terrible,if i put cold water in my mouth with the pain there,it goes, but then returns when the water warms up…

I went to dentist today and he said i have gum diesease i told him about the pain and he told me to just carry on with antibotics.

Two dentists have conflicting opinions concerning the health of my gums, what should I do?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Hi I am a bit concerned about the state my gums are in., I used to live down near Gloucestershire but have recently moved up north just outside of Manchester, reality check for me, I know! anyway not long before I left I’d had an appointment with my dentist/hygeinist who’d been somewhat concerned – no panicked but concerned about the wellbeing of my gums, she reckoned I had a more advanced stage of gum disease that could apparently be destructive, to what? anyway after six months I went for a check up at what is my new dentist who said everything looked fine!? you cansee the issue I have, If it were the other way around then Id suggest it had developed, I’d still seek advice as that would be quick to contract it and have it develop but its even quicker in terms of it just vanishing, I told him what my old dentist said and referred him to her in-case he wanted to chat but he checked again, no every things fine sir? I don’t know what to believe as my gums don’t look different to when I left? please could you help me what should I do or just look out for between now and my next check up? what do you advise? thank you!

My gums are tender and bleed from time to time, do I have gum disease?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello there I have a question for you please, when considering the symptoms that you see everywhere on the web with respect also to this website, of gum disease. is there any other symptoms to look for? my gums are really tender and bleed if they are caught awkwardly with a brush or sharp bit of an apple even for example. I wanted to know if this could mean that I have gum disease I know that bleeding gums is one of the common signs of gum disease and I did ask if there was anything else I should look out for but this is because I do not have any of the other symptoms so I wanted to just look out for any other signs if there were any indeed. if there isn’t does this simply mean that I am at not at an advanced stage of gum disease? thank you for any response.

How advanced is my gum disease and could mouthwash help?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

I have definitely got gum disease. the papilla either side of my upper right incisor has retraced and exposed two pin sized holes either side of my tooth which look a tiny margin bigger every time I floss. at this point how far has the (and I assume this is the case) periodontitis gone? I am booked in at my hygienist very soon where I will have it cleaned, but in a mean time and afterwards is there anything you can suggest? for example with mouthwash, will this make it worse (forcing acid through a small hole- wont that make the hole bigger) and if not which do I use? corsodyl is for gums and the Colgate ones for teeth isn’t it? I would appreciate any help you could give me. thank you.
