My gums are red and sore, am I developing gum disease?

Q.
Hello recently i have noticed on my bottom jaw at the top of my gum in between my teeth it is quite red and sore i am very worried about this . I wear invisible retainers that i have to wear all the time and a lot of plaque builds up quickly. i googled gum disease and my teeth don’t look as bad as the images that came up. Do i have the early stages of gum disease? Or is is just temporary swollen gums? I have only noticed the swellings in the last day.

Your problem may be related to the presence of plaque that you are not removing effectively and that may be causing gingivitis (mild inflammation of the gum margins). This is very common in between the teeth when no interdental cleaning devices (floss or special interdental brushes) are used regularly. Gingivitis can potentially lead to periodontitis (“gum disease”) resulting in bone loss and pocket formation under the gums. Your dentist can identify whether you have gum disease examining the depth of the pockets and if needed taking radiographs. It is also possible that your retainers are pressing the gums and are irritating them. This should be easily identified with a clinical examination.
