I smoke and have gum disease, when will it go?

Q.
ive got gum disaese and i smoke will i have gum disease forever or will it go and when?
A.
Gum disease, which causes bone loss around teeth, is caused by plaque in genetically susceptible individuals. The most common form of gum disease is chronic meaning that the potential for experiencing phases of deterioration (further bone loss) over a life time is always there. The good news is that in most cases this can be prevented with adequate treatment and home care. The bad news is that although smoking does not cause gum disease it is a very significant risk factor that increases the chances of accelerating the progression of the gum disease and decreases the chances of the treatment being successful. Every individual has different susceptibility and you may have moderate or severe gum disease which may or may not affect some or all teeth in the same way. In any case a consistent and effective good oral hygiene regime and professional care to remove the “hidden plaque” are essential to control the disease and stop its progression. I strongly advise you to stop smoking to reduce the risks and seek professional advice to evaluate the state of your gums and your treatment and maintenance needs.
