During pregnancy any gum inflammation initiated by plaque can be exacerbated by the hormonal changes that occur particularly in the second and third trimester. Swollen, red, tender gums that bleed when you floss or brush are a sign of pregnancy gingivitis, and about half of moms-to-be have these symptoms. If you don’t treat gingivitis, it can get worse and develop into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease in which the infection goes beyond your gums into the bone and other tissue that support your teeth. Brush thoroughly but gently at least twice a day using a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste with fluoride and floss daily. You will probably need also removal of plaque and tartar that brushing can’t get to. Try to schedule a visit with a dentist now for a thorough cleaning and checkup, you may need to go private if you want to get it sorted quicker but don’t allow to be put off getting treatment for being pregnant. If necessary local anesthesia such as Novocaine is safe throughout pregnancy. And if antibiotics are needed, there are pregnancy-safe drugs to choose from.
