If you have been diagnosed of having gum disease you need treatment. Good oral hygiene is of course essential for the treatment to be successful but not enough. The treatment can be provided by a general dentist, hygienist or periodontist (gum specialist) depending on the severity of the condition (early, moderate, or advanced) and the experience and expertise of the dental professional. You should ask for more information from your dentist that has assessed your gums and request referral if necessary.
