Hello, I Have Recently Been Diagnosed With Gum Disease, My Dentist Has Suggested Laser Treatment. Is This The Right Option?

September 30th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Mitsas. I have recently been diagnosed with gum disease and my dentist has decided that I should have laser treatment instead of surgery. I don’t know if this is a good idea as I really don’t like the idea of lasers. Surely the surgery would be more effective? I am basically asking for advice on what you would recommend for this condition? I have advanced gum disease and my teeth have deteriorated very quickly over just six weeks. What would you suggest is my best option?

I think I have gum disease, but I am not the biggest fan of the dentist, do you have any advice?

Q.

hi, I think I may have some form of gum disease but I have bit of a phobia of the dentistry. if I need to visit a dentist I accept it and will go but I want to avoid just going for the sake of it so I popped on here first to ask about it, I think I may go anyway but still, what will a dentist do to determine whether I do or don’t have it that I can’t otherwise do at home ? and If I do have gum disease of some form what will he do then will he extract a tooth in the area or start doing any surgery? if someone like me turns up with gum disease what will the dentist do? I am not that afraid of going just nervous a bit so I just want to be informed about gum disease and dentist before I do, thank you Dr.

Could aggressive manual brushing make my gums recede?

July 20th, 2011
Q.

I am 27 and I have recently been to the dentist for the first time in a few years. I had not really noticed but on closer inspection it appears my gums have started to recede. One of my lower teeth it is quite extreme and I can see quite a lot of the base of my tooth. The dentist said he thinks it could be because I have been using a manual toothbrush too aggressively. He seemed in a bit of a rush and aside from recommending an electric toothbrush and seeing a hygienist he didn’t go in to much more detail but did say I was young to have so much recession! I am really worried now that my teeth will fall out before I am 30! I am really healthy otherwise, I don’t smoke etc. I have an appointment with a hygienist and have changed to an electric toothbrush but I am wondering what I can expect long term?
