My parents started losing there teeth in their late 40’s, is it genetic?

Q.
Hello Ian, how are you? I just have a quick question regarding my teeth and gums. Unfortunately both my parents started loosing their teeth when they hit late 40’s. I don’t think there oral health was that bad, they say it was down to genetics? I was just wondering if i will suffer the same fate, is gum disease and losing teeth hereditary? Is there anything i can do to stop this? Any info would be great! Thanks!
A.
Hi,

Gum disease does have some genetic tendencies and I would suggest that as both parents lost teeth through gum disease that it puts you in a higher risk group of developing the same issues.

Meticulous oral hygiene and regular attendance at the dentist/hygienist is a must and avoidance of other known risk factors like smoking, stress and poor diet will also help. Ask your dentist if you have any signs of gum disease.
