I want orthodontic treatment but have gum disease, how do I get rid of it?

Q.
I am having a bit of an issue of you could please help me please Dr Zurdo. I have overlapped teeth and have been dying to get some form of orthodontic treatment for anwehile now. the issue is my gums bleed and are always very tender to touch. I assume this means theres something wrong and despite decent oral hygiene for a good while there doesnt seem to be an end in site to this. I know i must have excellent oral health in order to have braces but i dont know how i can further help my situation in getting rid of this bleeding? if you could please advise me that would be great then i can get the treatment i need and have straight teeth again! than you very much.

Hi there! It sounds like you have a gum disease problem. This should be treated and controlled before you initiate in any orthodontic treatment. The standard of your oral hygiene is, as you well said, very important but you also require a proper diagnosis (extension and severity of the problem) and consequent treatment for your gums. The gum treatment may be just on the form of a “deep root clean “ under local anesthesia (we call it non-surgical root surface debridement) or it may even require gum surgery. I advise you to ask your dentist for a gum health screen to start with and a possible referral to a Specialist, if he cannot provide this treatment for you. I hope this is helpful.
