I have smoked for two years and think I have gum disease, what should I do?

Q.
I think I may have gum disease as my gums bleed after brushing and the gum between my bottom fang and molar seems to have a split in it. I brush twice a day and regularly floss and use mouthwash however I have smoked for two years. I haven’t really suffered with dental problems apart from having a brace in my teens. What should I do? I’m quite apprehensive about going the dentist plus I don’t have the funds right now. Thanks!

Hi, it is important that you check with your dentist the state of your gums. The symptoms you describe suggest indeed that you are suffering from some form of gum disease. Smoking is an important aggravating factor for this condition, also, the fact that you had braces will/may predispose to some gum problems. You need a periodontal screening so that a proper diagnose can be made. Thereafter you will be given a treatment plan. Please consult with your dentist.
