It is uncommon to experience persisting discomfort following the first few days after treatment with the hygienist. If you have been diagnosed with gum disease and received initial treatment it is essential to evaluate the response of your gums and assess further treatment and/or maintenance needs. Your discomfort may be localised or generalised, related to persisting inflammation due to poor response to treatment, or on the contrary related to increased sensitivity caused by the treatment despite improved gum condition. You need a detailed examination to answer all those questions. Do not hesitate to request your dentist to be referred to a specialist in gum disease (periodontist) if you are not happy with the results or the information that you receive is not satisfactory.
