I have a crack in my gum but I don’t recall making it. What is it and who do I see, doctor or dentist?

Q.
Im worried about my gums state of health, I have a long split in my gum from my right canine(?) tooth leading upwards towards my cheek inside my mouth, it has been there for a month now and seems to heal then reappaer, it doesn’t hurt unless I touch it continually. Who do I see? a Doctor or a dentist for this and what could have caused it as I don’t recall eating anything sharp like crisps to have had this appear. Thankyou
A.
You should see a dentist as the cause may be related to the tooth itself or the gum and/or bone surrounding it. Hee/she will be able to identify whether it has been caused by trauma or there is any other underline pathology. Some people with healthy but extremely thin gums develop gum recessions, which occasionally appear as a split, as a result of aggressive brushing over the time. Your dentist will be able to refer you to other specialist if required.
