I do not smoke and have a good diet, so why do I have bleeding gums?

Q.
Every time i brush my teeth my gums bleed and have done for years. I have a good diet, non smoker.
Do bleeding gums always indicate gum disease or could there be another answer to bleeding gums?
Thank you
A.
Bleeding gums normally indicates inflammation caused by the presence of plaque either visible (over the gum margins) or hidden (under the gums). This inflammation is quite often superficial without affecting the supporting bone (gingivitis), however it can result in progressive loss of the supporting tissues (periodontitis or “gum disease”) in susceptible individuals leading to the potential loss of teeth. It is true that there are other conditions that can cause bleeding gums without being plaque-related but this is uncommon. I advise you to visit your dentist to identify whether you have gingivitis or periodontitis so that you receive appropriate treatment. If the problem persists you will need specialist examination for adequate diagnosis and management.
