I am worried the condition of my gums would prevent the option of braces. Is there any way to check this?

Q.
Hi. I have been worried about my gums for a long time. they used to bleed when I brushed but they don’t any more. the thing is I have crooked teeth and wanted to have a brace but I am scared that my gums health will not allow this. Does the fact that I had/have something wrong with my gums mean itll be easier to contract again or not? And Is there anyway I can check to see If I have a gum problem and can it directly affect me getting brace treatment? thank you
A.
Gum disease is caused by plaque only in susceptible individuals, however the susceptibility to develop the disease is not always obvious, therefore the most sensible thing to do is to prevent it from appearing or coming back in any case. The most effective preventive measure is good oral hygiene. Also any dentist should be able to diagnose the presence of active disease and the potential need for treatment. If your teeth are not aligned, cleaning effectively in between them may be more difficult but still possible. Aligning them can have the positive effect of facilitating your cleaning in the long-term, nevertheless if you are going to have braces it is essential that your gums are healthy in the first place. You can discuss this with the dentist that will plan your brace treatment, who should check the state of your gums and assess the potential need for a specific regime.
