I am due to have gum surgery. What is it exactly and why do I need it?

Q.
Hi, I need your opinion and help on a problem I am having. I have neen told I need work doing around the base of one of my teeth but the dentist said in order to do that a small slither of gum is going have to be cut, you know like a flap. This sounds barbaric to me and i wnder f there is another way to carry it out. I hope you know know of the procedure I am talking about. If you are i want to know, not only if there is another way, but how this will affect my gum tissue? when i was young I had gingivitus and my gums bled a lot then, this has gone now but I dontwant anything like that happeniing again? thanks Dr

Hello. In some cases the only way to solve the gum problem at a given tooth/teeth is by doing surgery, yes, we call it flap surgery. It is a more effective way to reach/access areas affected by disease (infection), which cannot be dealt with non-surgically, I like to call it “Spring clean”, like when you move the sofa and the rugs to properly do a deep clean…The gum flaps are raised, the teeth are cleaned, the bone may be (or not) reshaped and the same flap is positioned back again and held by stiches. It is frequent to see some gum recession after the healing, but there is a good chance that the deep infection is cleared.
