How quickly can you contract gum disease?

Q.
OK , i’ll say i havn’t been brushing my teeth the past week cause i’ve been so busy and tired i’ve been forgetting to brush so tonight i brushed them and they started bleeding round the front upper teeth, do i just need to brush more or could it be gum disease? I hope it isnt i’m just wondering cause my teeth have starting bleeding after brushing but i then asked my mum and she said gum disease but im not sure is she is joking or being serious?
A.
Hi, it is possible that you developed gingivitis, which is a reversible form of gum disease) as a consequence of lack of (or improper) tooth brushing for a 10-15 days. If this is the case, resuming a regular and efficient removal of dental plaque, on a daily basis, should make your gum stop bleeding. However, to be on the safe side, I advise you to see your dentist and request a screening for gum problems. Hope this helps
