After Smoking for 23 years I have severe gum disease, My dentist said I need at least 8 sessions of deep scale cleaning at £98 per session, do I need that many?

Q.
Can you help – I have given up smoking after 23 years and have now been diagnosed with severe gum disease. I have read your treatment for periodontal gum problems and my dentist says this is what I need. He says I need to have 8 sessions of deep scale cleaning and anti-biotics. These sessions are £98 a time! This is where my problem is. I obviously need this procedure but do I really need 8 sessions? I think my dentist is trying to get money out of me. Please advise me if 8 sessions is common. Thank you very much.
A.
The standard treatment of advanced gum disease involves deep scaling of all teeth affected. There are several protocols available, which can be all effective, and in many cases they can be adjusted to the patient’s and/or the dentist’s preference. When most teeth are severely affected (deep pockets spread in all areas) the most common treatment protocols involve 2-3 hours of treatment carried out within 4 sessions (one session per quadrant), 2 sessions (half mouth each session) or 1 session (full mouth in one session).
