A bit of my gum literally went white then fell off. What could this be due to?

Q.
I started to have a sore gum and days later my gum went white around my tooth and while brushing my teeth the white bit of gum came of the tooth and i also have alcers on my gums i am 17 years old always go to dentist and my gums and teeth were perfectly fine a couple of weeks ago i always brush my teeth although i am a smoker i have been cutting down on the cigarettes after this happened i am scared of this infection spreading so my question is do you know what could be wrong with my gums?
A.
I would contact your dentist as soon as possible. This sounds like a very serious situation and could be a number of things including bacterial infection or viral infection. Depending on what you dentist sees depends on the diagnosis and subsequent treatment but I would get this checked asap and If I were in this situation it would be enough to make stop smoking completely- for the sake of my gums! good luck.
