I have a dark ‘blob’ on my gum, could it be gum disease?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hello. Dr Ian Dunn I have a question about my gums and I’m worried I may have gum disease at an early form. I dont think I have ever had gum disease as i have never had any issues with my gums before now, not any of the ones listed on this website anyway. the problem is I was looking at my gums whilst flossing the other day and I noticed there is small dark patch just above my right upper central tooth. it looks like a vein would just under the surface, dark. but its a blob shape not a wirey shape? I have never noticed it before so i assume its new, its now been there for three days and has worried me a little what would be your thiughts on this situation? thank you

The gums around my wisdom teeth are looser than my other gums, is this normal?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

hello doctor

I was just wondering if you could help me. I have noticed that the gums at the very back of my mouth aren’t completely attached to my teeth. To be honest i do have wisdom teeth there, so i don’t know whether I am over-reacting or anything, but i just though it would be best to get the opinion of an expert such as yourself.

Do you think i have anything to worry about?

many thanks

Has my pregnancy caused gum disease?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

I am into my second month of pregnancy and I have just been informed after a recommended visit to my dentist that I have gum disease. There is blood when I brush and it was this that first alerted me to this. When I told a friend about this they told me to go to the dentist. Is there any way to treat it without causing any harm to my unborn baby and will it be permanent. Please, this is quite an urgent matter.

How do I stop myself losing more teeth?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

Dear Experts I am very anxious and a bit depressed about loosing one of the very front teeth on my bottom jaw. For ages it has been a bit wobbly from time to time and slowly moving upwards and upwards to the point where the tooth had to be cut down by my dentist to keep it in line with the others. for a couple of years there has been a deep fissure in the gum directly below the tooth/ my dentist seemd very relaxed about it and said we could try to keep it going as long as possible, so I did not worry. Recently I have been very stressed for several months and forgotten to be so rigorous with the cleaning of that area. the tooth came out with no blood or hole. I have now have sudenly become aware of how the neighbouring teeth each have very little gum each on the missing gum side. while the rest of my mouth has a couple of mm gum recession it is far worse around the front 3 teeth. I am very worried about a denture. Is it likely that a gum graft could help to support these neighbouring teeth and stop them from following suit? My NHS dentist have never mentioned periontal disease, so I was unaware of the problem as there was never any bleeding. ive now looked at lots of dental sites on the internet and am horrified at what i didnt know and what i could have avoided. MAny Thanks for any light you could shed on stopping any further tooth loss. Many Thanks for your help.

Will antibiotics help stop my gums aching and bleeding?

December 22nd, 2011
Q.

Hi,

I have had aching gums for a while now and didn’t realise that it was anything abnormal.  I went to the dentist and he told me that It has meant that I have been pressing my teeth together which has probably made matters worse. I only realised when my dentist said that I need to start flossing. Is that going to cure things or do I need to take anti-biotics? I dont want to keep going on with bleeding and aching gums.

Thanks for your help

My gums have receded and revealed a ‘notch in my tooth’, do I have gum disease?

December 22nd, 2011
Q.

Hi there, I am 25 years old. Recently, I have noticed that the gums at the tops of my teeth appear to be wearing away slightly and there is now a ‘notch’ between the top of my tooth and the gumline. I don’t have any real pain but some sensitivity when I brush. Also, the top part of my tooth seems to be a slightly different colour to the original tooth. I visited a dentist and he advised me that this was ‘nothing to worry about and probably from overbrushing’ but that it seemes ‘slightly worse than normal for people of my age’. I’m still concerned and looking for further answers and solutions. Is there anything I can do to help this, prevent it from worsening, or even reverse it? and do you think this could be gum disease? Many thanks

Can eating lots of sweets, pre-diabetes and gum disease all be linked?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.

hello. Dr Dunn I have a question involving gum disease. I recently looked at how much chocolate/chocolate bars/confectionery I eat and to be honest its too much- way way way to much! I know that the first thing to be damaged is obviously my teeth ad the tooth enamel. I have also been warned that if I keep it up I may contract pre diabetes? which is basically diabetes before diabetes or something. I was wondering if all three things could be linked, and aside from cutting down on the sugary things is there anything other than this that I can do to aid the health of my gums?
