My gum disease treatment was successful but now I hate the look of my receded gums. What can be done?

Q.
Hello

is there any way of cosmetically treating gums that have receded to make them smaller again? I have recently successfully completed treatment for gum disease, but i really hate the way my gums look, as they show a lot more teeth and it just looks very unnattractive. Is there anything i can do?

thank you

Hello, depending on the degree of recession you have suffered after your gum treatment, there are some ways of correcting these “black triangles” and the recessions making teeth look “smaller”. Bearing in mind that it’s very difficult to advise without a proper consultation, I can enumerate various options that you may want to discuss with your dentist. The size of teeth, their shape and alignment can be easily fixed by veneers/crowns and in some cases even just with “composite” (tooth-colored material) reshaping.
Orthodontic treatment (braces) can “disguise” the interdental spaces by bringing the teeth closer together and “pressing” down the papillae.
Finally, there are some gum-colored silicone removable devices we call “gum shields” that can be “clipped on” to your teeth and cover the recessions, these are practical but not ideal, as they can trap more bacteria, which is something you need to avoid.
I recommend you to discuss this issue with your dentist, ideally over some pictures of your teeth and smile line. Alternativelly, request him to refer you to a Specialist Periodontist.
