Has my pregnancy caused gum disease?

Q.
I am into my second month of pregnancy and I have just been informed after a recommended visit to my dentist that I have gum disease. There is blood when I brush and it was this that first alerted me to this. When I told a friend about this they told me to go to the dentist. Is there any way to treat it without causing any harm to my unborn baby and will it be permanent. Please, this is quite an urgent matter.
A.
Hi, there are hormonal changes during pregnancy that, in some women, can lead to this kind of symptoms; increased bleeding and even swelling of your gums. It is important that your dentist sees you and that the dentist or a hygienist can give you a proper treatment, which mainly comprises of oral hygiene technique improvement and a general scale/polish of all mouth, especially where inflammation is more evident. This is especially important if you already have some initial bone loss. You can have treatment during your second trimester, as it is generally safe for you and your baby, even if you need local anesthesia. If you already suffered bone loss, this is in most cases irreversible. So please go and see your dentist for a gum check and advise. I hope this information is helpful.
