Why have my gums started to bleed after my tooth extraction?

Q.
Recently Iav just had to have a tooth extracted as all of a sudden I have receeding gums and terrible gum disease. Dentist over the years seemed to miss this out (NHS and private) resulting in my having to loose a perfectly healthy tooth. Please could you tell me how to prevent this from happening again? Thanks
A.
You need a comprehensive examination of your gums and bone to assess whether you gum disease is localised (only the tooth that you have lost had gum disease?) or generalised (if more teeth are affected how extensive and severe is the disease?) and whether it is active or stable. Based on this examination you should have a treatment plan to stop any active disease and/or a maintenance regime to monitor and prevent any further deterioration or recurrence of the disease. Although gum disease can occasionally progress quickly its pattern of progression is usually rather slow and it can be easily identified by any general dentist. If your dentist was unable to diagnose your condition you should look for an alternative dentist or periodontist (gum specialist) and request a detailed risk assessment.
