My rubber gum shield is making my gums itch and feels strange, am i allergic to it?

Q.
Hello Jose Zurdo, I have a quick question which I hope you can help me with, I have just started playing rugby at school. I have bought a rubber gum shield from a sports shop and I moulded it in my mouth last week. I’ve been wearing it in training the last few days and while wearing it my gums are really itchy and feel very strange? Is it possible my gums are reacting to the rubber? or am I allergic to it? Have you had any cases like this before?
A.
Hi there! Actually I haven’t! It is possible that an allergic reaction may occur, however wearing it may worsen any underlying condition you may have. You also need to be very careful with your oral hygiene and the hygiene of this appliance. To be on the safe side, bring it to your dentist and request a gum check and let him see if the limits/boundaries of this appliance are hurting your gums.
