My gums dont always bleed but do I have gum disease?

Q.
Hi, My gums bleed after I brush them, however it isn’t all the time like you’d expect with gum disease, it’s only occasionally as in once every week or something. Could this mean I have gum disease or just that Iam brushing too hard? I don’t have bad breathe or any gum recession, also Iam a none smoker, hope you can help me thanks
A.
Gum disease, which results in loss of bone support around teeth, is usually associated with bleeding gums, however it is not uncommon to find a relative inconsistency between the symptoms and the extent of the disease. In other words many people do not experience significant bone loss despite obvious superficial inflammation and bleeding (gingivitis); on the contrary there are people with substantial bone loss (periodontitis) without apparent or minimal bleeding. Only a simple clinical examination carried out by a dentist can easily answer your question.
