My gums bleed when I brush them could there be an underlying issue?

Q.
Hello Doctor, I was wondering if you could help me with a problem to do with my gums. I went travelling to Australia about three years ago, while I was there, unfortunately I didn’t stick to a very good oral hygiene regime for the year I was there. I don’t have any fillings or rotten teeth, but I have noticed that when I brush my teeth, sometimes my gums bleed. I don’t brush especially hard and use a medium brush. I also use a sensitive mouthwash. Could this just be down to me brushing, or another underlying issue? Any feedback would be much appreciated, Thanks!

Hi, healthy gums do not bleed! I recommend you to request a basic periodontal examination to your dentist. If gum problems are detected, a radiograph should be done to assess any degree of bone involvement. After this diagnostic phase you should get the appropriate treatment. The earlier you do this the better to minimize/arrest destruction of attachment and supporting bone to your teeth.
