Hi there, gum disease is a chronic disease, caused by bacteria around the necks of the teeth resulting in a chronic inflammation of the gums. The gums may bleed, there may be swelling and as the supporting bone and attachment to the tooth “wears” off, the teeth may become mobile. There are aggravating factors like smoking, stress, tooth grinding and so on, which can accelerate the progression of the destruction.
The treatment needs to focus on the control of bacteria, both above the gum (toothbrushing especially between teeth) and under the gums (by the dentist/hygienist). Sometimes a course of antibiotics is recommended with the dental treatment. If tooth grinding is an important factor, the use of a “night-guard” may also be recommended. There is not much evidence to recommend special foods and drinks. You need a course of periodontal treatment, which can require local anesthesia. Please return to your dentist and request treatment options for this condition. If in doubt, request a referral to a specialist Periodontist.
I hope this is helpful!
