I Suffer From Depression And Would Like To Know If Stress Can Impact On Overall Oral Health?

Q.
Hi Dr. Dunn, recently I have been suffering from severe depression. I have always maintained the best oral hygiene but noticed that my gums are bleeding when I brush them now. Can stress actually have an impact on your oral health? Do you think it could be something to do with the medication I have been prescribed? My gums also appear to be quite red, I don’t know what course of action I could take, do you have any advice for me? Thanks for your time.

Hi, the best thing for you to do would be check up with your dentist and tell him the type of medication your taking. Is it a case of brushing too hard, as sometimes when we see a little bleeding we brush harder, which in turn can cause more bleeding? Stress can have an impact on all area of health and the gums are no exception. It sounds like you have nothing serious to worry about with regards to the health of your teeth and will hopefully get checked up to fix this problem. Thank you. Dr Ian Dunn.
