I have to wear a gum shield at night due to my tooth grinding and now I have dark spots on my gums. Advice?

Q.
Dear Jose

I have been treated for grinding my teeth and wear a gum shield at night. Recently I have been having discomfort in my front lower teeth and my dentist has said that I have sensitive teeth, but I have dark spots on my gums a regular nasty taste in my mouth and soreness in my cheeks and receding gums which my dentist has said is caused by overbrushing – can you please advise me on what you think is wrong with my teeth

Thank you

A.
The soreness in your cheeks, recession of your gums and discomfort in your lower front teeth could be explained by your grinding habit and aggressive brushing could be also a factor as your dentist mentioned to you. Regarding the dark spots on your gums they may be harmless as most spots found on gums are not serious and result from natural skin pigments, tiny bruises, hardened plaque, and in some cases they are tattoos caused by small pieces of silver fillings under the gum. Only in very rare cases they can mean oral melanoma, which is a form of oral cancer. Nevertheless the bad taste is not explained by any of the above-mentioned potential causes and it is possible that you have some form of gum disease. Your dentist should be able to give you a thorough diagnosis after examination of your gums and bone surrounding your teeth.
