I had my tonsils taken out recently and my gums have now started to swell up, is this due to the operation?

Q.
Jose – I have a question for you about my gums! I’ve recently had my tonsils taken out because i was getting tonsillitis very frequently. So after my operation my throat was very sore so i was eating ice cream and cool drinks to ease the pain. Recently my gums have been swelling up, I’m not sure if its something to do with the operation or is it the change in diet? I don’t eat very much dairy products normally. Whats your advice? Cheers!
A.
Hi, this may be more likely due to the fact that your oral hygiene may have dropped during the post-op, which is natural, a change of diet to more sugary foods can lead to increased plaque formation. Your gums may be reacting to it.
Try to keep a meticulous tooth brushing technique, not forgetting to clean between the teeth, you may want to use an antibacterial mouthwash for 3-4 days to aid in reducing the inflammation. If you have no results after this, my advice is to visit your dentist and have a gum check to see if more serious problems are present. I hope this may be of help.
