At 13 is it normal to have gum disease and what should I do?

Q.
Hello Dr Ian Dunn and I am twelve years old and thirteen in April. My dentist has just told me I have gum disease, severe gum disease to the lower mouth. I have two questions: is it normal for someone my age to get gum disease? And what can I do to treat it and prevent getting it again? I know there is already information on this website but I really need some advice. To be honest I’m scared.

Hi,

Thanks for your question. You are right to be concerned but you need to find out exactly what type of gum disease your dentist thinks you have. Have they suggested referral to a specialist? If they mentioned gingivitis then you can relax and you just need to clean your teeth better, this is a very common thing and many patients of your age will have it to one degree or another. If it is any more than that then you really need to be referred to a specialist.

Regards

Ian
