Are gum disease and diabetes linked?

May 18th, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Dunn, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes around 1 year ago which was a big shock. I have heard a few times that gum disease and diabetes are linked somehow? Do you know anything about this? My gums are very red and sore, bleeding occasionally but I have good hygiene in my mouth, clean 2 times a day and floss!! Is there any special medicine or toothpaste I can take for my problems? or what do you suggest? Cheers thank you Ian.

Q.

Hello Dr, I have part dentures and i hoped to hang on to my remaining teeth but i have bleeding on my eye tooth, is this the end?  I clean 4 times a day and use mouthwash. I am mid sixties and cant afford very expensive treatment .I noticed the last time i went to my dentist to have the front tooth removed he didnt suggest cleaning. I did not like to ask as i went national health. I used to go private with the same dentist but my circumstances changed after 2 berievments and suddenly not working. Any advice would be great.

Diagnosed with gum disease, told not to start antibiotics until my next appointment which is in 3 weeks, is this correct?

May 18th, 2012
Q.

Hi there, I’ve been diagnosed with gum disease today. I have been given a prescription for antibiotics but told not to start them until 3 days before my 1st appointment to have my teeth thoroughly cleaned, however the earliest appointment is on the 16th May, 3 weeks away. I forgot to mention to the dentist that I also have neutropenia. Is it ok to wait 3 weeks without taking the anitbiotics? It seems odd to be diagnosed then told to wait, admittedly the dentist wouldn’t have known that it would be a 3 week wait. Please can you advise? Many thanks!

I’ve got flu like symptoms and my gums started bleeding quite a lot, I’ve been advised to use Corsodyl, will this cure my problem?

May 3rd, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Ian Dunn, I was wondering if you could help me, I have recently been having flu like syptoms and it seems overnight my gums have started bleeding quite alot and becoming inflamed after cleaning. They have not been bleeding prior to this for some reason i am linking it to this. I have looked into several websites inc Nhs direct and have been advised to use corsodyl which i started using yesterday. Will this be able to cure them and is this the correct procedure plus should i floss to get rid of all bacteria that has built up. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!
