My gums bleed and the pain stops me from sleeping, help?

Q.
Hi Dr.Dunn , I have recently found out that whenever I brush my teeth they start bleeding and there is a pain in my gums for all day after brushing them in the morning, I am 28 years old and I never had problem with my teeth so far this is the first time I have started to bleed and i cannot sleep at night just because of the pain in gums, what is your expert advice on this ?
A.
Thanks for the question.

Regarding the bleeding, this is a sign of gum disease but you need to see a dentist or Periodontist to see if it is the non-destructive form, Gingivitis, or the destructive form, Periodontitis.

Regarding the pain, there are very few gum conditions that cause pain as you describe and other things like tooth decay, infection or tooth grinding.

The advice has to be that you see a dentist for a check up and they can take x-rays and diagnose what is going on as from the limited information you have given me, it sounds like a multifactorial problem.

Good luck with it.
