Gum disease is usually a non-painful condition. You may have an acute condition called Acute Necrotising Ulcerative Gingivitis and this can be very painful and give significant bad breath. This can be treated with Antibiotics if it is severe or with improved oral hygiene and a peroxide mouthwash like Peroxyl.

If you dentist is unable to help I would suggest asking for a referral elsewhere or changing the dentist you see.
