I Have Recently Stopped Smoking But My Teeth Have Now Begun To Bleed From Time To Time. What Should I Do?

Hello Dr Mitsas I hope you can help me. I have recently stopped smoking and have been doing very well. I’ve always visited hygienists and dentists as often as I could because of this as I still wanted to maintain good oral health. However, I’ve noticed that since stopping that my gums are bleeding. It’s only a few spots here and there so do you think I should be concerned about this and what would you recommend I do about this? Thank you for your time.
Hello and well done for quitting smoking. Bleeding gums can happen from time, if it’s fairly consistent bleeding I would recommend using a softer brush and if there is no change after a week, go to your hygienist. You may need a scale and polish. They may offer you some mouthwash as well. You should avoid any alcohol-based mouthwashes also as there have been recent concerns with links to mouth cancer. I hope this helps you. Kind regards, Dr Dimitrios Mitsas.
