Could my holiday be the cause of my bleeding gums?

Q.
Hello Dr Ian Dunn,
I came back from a 2 week lads holiday to greece 2 weeks ago and for the past 3weeks my ums have been bleeding and are really sore when I brush them. Could this have anything to do with my recent holiday or just a coincidence that this has started to happen, also what can i do to stop them from bleeding and get back to normal? thanks
A.
Tbanks for getting in touch. This is deffinately something that needs to be seen by your dentist so that the correct diagnosis can be made. That said, it is likely that you have got one of the acute gum conditions like Acute Ulcerative Gingivitis or Primary Herpetic Gingivostomatatis. The first is bacterail in origin and responds well to certain antibiotics and the second is viral in origin and will clear on its own usually after 7-14 days.

Both conditions are very painful and can cause bleeding gums. I would suggest that you continue to clean as best possible and, in the short term, use a mouthwash like Corsodyl or Peroxyl to prevent further infection.

These things are more common when you are run down or have not been looking after yourself ie over tired/stress/poor diet/not cleaning properly etc and it is likley that your “lads holiday” has taken it out of you leaving you prone to this happening.

Like I said, go an see your dentist to confirm the diagnosis and get the right treatment.
