The gum on my lower lip is coming away from my teeth, it’s painful to talk and eat and my teeth feel loose, is this treatable?

Q.
The bit of my gum that is connected to my lower lip is severely coming away from my teeth. It did bleed when I brushed my teeth, but doesn’t anymore. However, it is extremely painful to talk and eat and is sore even when my mouth is closed. My teeth around this area are also slightly loose, and I have a constant bad taste in my mouth. I am fairly sure that it is gum disease but I was wondering if this is treatable, because I have read that if it gets too severe then the effects are irreversible

Hi, this sounds like a localized gum problem related to the insertion of a labial frenulum (muscle fiber insertions from the lip into the bone). In this area the gum is sometime very thin and if inflamed due to plaque accumulation and/or trauma from brushing, it can get really “intense” and lead to significant gum recession… You should see your dentist at first instance and once the plaque and most of the inflammation is under control, the dentist should see if a gum graft could be beneficial, if so you should seek for a gum specialist opinion and treatment.
