I Was Confused By My Recent Visit To The Dentist. He Said I Have Gingivitis, But I Don’t Understand The Link With Gum Disease. Can You Explain It To Me?

April 7th, 2014
Q.

Hello there Dr Mitsas. My dentist has only just recently diagnosed me with gingivitis, and assures me that he can fix it. But he confused me when talking about the link between gingivitis and gum disease. Are they the same thing? Is having gingivitis the same as gum disease? I just want to know what I’m up against. I don’t really understand what he was saying so I thought I would get an expert opinion. If you could just provide some clarity on this situation I would be very grateful, Thank you in advance.

I Have Been Told I Have The Initial Stages Of Gum Disease And I’m Wondering What I Can Do For It?

April 1st, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have been told I have the initial stages of gum disease and was wondering what I can do for it? I have bought special toothpaste, and gargle with Listerene. I was wondering how long it’s going to last? I do not have bad breath with it, and I think I am currently doing everything possible to help it get better. My dad was 18 when he had it and lost all his teeth, so he had to wear dentures. What’s the cause of gum disease? And are there any complications that come with it? Thank you.

I’ve got flu like symptoms and my gums started bleeding quite a lot, I’ve been advised to use Corsodyl, will this cure my problem?

May 3rd, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Ian Dunn, I was wondering if you could help me, I have recently been having flu like syptoms and it seems overnight my gums have started bleeding quite alot and becoming inflamed after cleaning. They have not been bleeding prior to this for some reason i am linking it to this. I have looked into several websites inc Nhs direct and have been advised to use corsodyl which i started using yesterday. Will this be able to cure them and is this the correct procedure plus should i floss to get rid of all bacteria that has built up. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Can I keep bacteria from settling by swilling water constantly?

October 11th, 2011
Q.

good afternoon,
I have been doing a bit of online research and have found that the flow of saliva plays a massive part in getting rid of bacterium and plaque obviously not getting rid of it all but helping. so then I had this thought. if it takes around Fifteen minutes for plaque to build up after a snack or meal whilst out of the house could I swill my mouth with a drink- water! in order to aid the saliva’s job or disrupting the bacteria as it tries to form? would this be a good idea? I have a two pin sized holes either side of my top, right, central incisor. I was hoping by doing this I could help stop them growing bigger? are they a sign of periodontitis/gingivitus/neither and if so will this help
