My Upper Gums Are Bleeding Quite Badly. Has This Gone Worse Because I’m Wearing Braces?

Q.
Hi Dr Mitsas, I hope you can help me. I had a brace fitted 3 years ago because I had very crooked teeth and it’s still on. I’ve got slight gum disease, is this made worse with braces? My upper gums are receding quite badly. I’m just inquiring to see if there’s anything that can be done about this? If so I’d just like a rough guideline on costs? What would the procedure involve? I look forward to hearing an experts opinion on this matter. Thank you for your input in advance.

Hello and thank you for reaching me. It’s important to keep a close eye on your oral health whilst wearing braces as gum disease can develop more readily. This is because food gets trapped between the brackets and increases the spread of bacteria. I would advise you to see a hygienist or orthodontist to help address this issue. Using interdental brushes will help you clean hard to reach places better. I hope this helps. Dr Dimitrios Mitsas.
